Route Information

A linear route following the Wales Coast Path in north Wales, taking in Treborth Botanic Garden (maintained by Bangor University), woodland, views of the Menai Strait and Britannia Bridge before ending on the Faenol Estate maintained by the National Trust. 

You can extend this walk by combining it to the Felinheli to Caernarfon route to make an 11 miles or 18 kilometre walk between Treborth Botanic Gardens and Caernarfon. You can do this by continuing along the path from the Faenol Estate and following the Wales Coast Path signs to toward Felinheli. The path between the Faenol Estate and Felinheli follows a rough track which is used for private vehicle access and can get muddy and uneven in wet weather.

You can follow a shorter, circular route can also by following the Wales Coast Path for 0.6 miles or 1 kilometre and then ascending gradually to the botanic gardens.

This online map features photographs at significant points along the route, providing detailed descriptions of the path, including locations of handrails, benches for resting, and the path's gradient.

It is always advisable to carry a paper map as a backup to a digital map, especially if you are unfamiliar with this section of the Wales Coast Path.

Path Description

Start: Treborth Botanic Garden, Bangor
Finish: Faenol Estate (nearest landmark on a map is “Boathouse Covert”)
Distance: The linear route is 3 kilometres or 2 miles (there and back)
Time: Allow 2 to 3 hours
Surface: Compacted stone with a loose surface in some places. Some uneven ground.
Slopes: The route has some slopes and steep camber in some places and some users may need help.
Route Profile: The route profile tells you how high you can expect to climb and shows you the highest point on this route. There is no more than 30m ascent.
Path Width: Minimum is 1.5 metre
Kissing Gate: There is one kissing gate at the entrance to the route from the botanic garden. There is a gate from the path onto the road as you enter Felinheli.
Other barriers – There is a cattle grid and a narrow ornate metal gate (approximately 1 metre width) at the other end of the route on the Faenol Estate. This may mean some visitors will need to turn back at this point.

Parking: There is limited parking with two disabled bays at the entrance to Treborth Botanic Garden There are several disabled parking spaces at the Felinheli end of the route along Beach Road.

Toilets:  There are no accessible toilets at Treborth Botanic Garden at present. Toilets are in Menai Bridge Waitrose supermarket (across the bridge on Anglesey) and the Antelope Inn on the Treborth side of the Menai Suspension Bridge. At the other end of the route there are accessible toilets in the town of Felinheli on Beach Road.
