Rhys Roberts, Wales Coast Path Officer highlight

"Enjoy amazing views, beautiful beaches and diverse wildlife on this walk.  Before Porthmadog was developed, Borth y Gest was the crossing over the wide and dangerous Glaslyn estuary, and locals earned money by guiding travellers across the treacherous sands of Traeth Mawr to Harlech. Look closely into the sea today; you may see a Leatherback turtle!"

Route Information

From the car park follow the Wales Coast Path signs westwards passing terraced houses.  Enjoy wonderful expansive views of the Afon Glaslyn, one of the area’s primary rivers.

The Augmented Reality experience panel is on the grassy area, use the Wales Coast Path app on your mobile device (smart phone or tablet) to meet the leatherback turtle and explore Porthmadog’s fascinating history.

Continue on the path until you reach Ynys Cyngar, a small headland which was once a tidal island.  You can return on the same path.

Want to go further?

If you want to explore further then why not venture a little further on to Black Rock Sands - one of the largest stretches of sand in North Wales. Remember to take a bucket and spade!

Along the way

The walk is suitable for families; the first section of the walk to the augmented reality panel is suitable for prams.
